Buckfast Abbey & Butterfly Farm - This magnificent building is a mix of early English and French styles and has been credited as a wonder of the 20th century. Famous for its Benedictine honey and Buckfast Tonic Wine, which is made from a secret formula.. The Butterfly Farm is a large tropical hot house where the butterflies live in a semi-natural environment.
South Devon Railway - This steam railway follows the old Ashburton line along the river Dart through Staverton to Totnes, some seven miles away. The station in Buckfastleigh is adjacent to the Butterfly Farm and the Dartmoor Otter Sanctuary.
Bicton Park Botanical Gardens - arguably one of the finest old gardens in England. 60 acres of Formal Gardens, a magnificent glass domed Palm House, the Historic Formal Garden inspired by Versailles, and the Woodland Railway. The Orangery Restaurant is perfect for meals or light snacks. There is also a spacious gift shop and garden centre.
Dartmouth Castle with Slapton Sands & Kingsbridge - Dartmouth Castle is built at the water's edge in the narrow entrance of the Dart estuary. Its military history spans well over 500 years and visitors can experience breathtaking views from the battlements. Slapton Sands is a long shingle beach popular with windsurfers and sailors alike. Famed for being the beach where many lives were lost during the rehearsals for the D-Day landings in 1944. Kingsbridge - is a quaint town with cobbled streets, passages and alleyways. Its most interesting building is The Shambles, an old market hall raised on granite pillars dating from Elizabethan Times, where markets are still held today. The town is at the head of the Kingsbridge Estuary and was once a busy port. Boat trips on the river are very popular and it’s a great place for the fisherman!
Killerton House (NT) - This fine 18th century house is home to the ‘Paulise de Bush’ costume collection, with over 9,000 outfits all displayed within a series of period rooms. It has a spectacular hillside garden featuring rhododendrons, magnolias and rare trees and with stunning parkland walks there is something to suit all tastes.
RHS Rosemoor - Set in the North Devon countryside this enchanting garden is a delight whatever the time of year. Originally only 8 acres it has been greatly developed into 65 acres of beautiful gardens and woodland.
Okehampton Castle - The former home of one of Devon’s most powerful families this was once the largest castle in Devon. Its remains lie in a picturesque setting with a picnic area and woodland walks nearby.
Totnes Castle - This is the best surviving example of a Norman Motte & Bailey castle. The once great ditch that surrounded the keep is today filled with the cottages and gardens of the town.
